Abstract
Eduard Rüppell's 1822-1827 travel writings offer valuable early European descriptions of Jebel Barkal and Begrawiya, predating systematic excavation. This study uses descriptive-analytical and critical historical methods to assess the archaeological significance of Rüppell's observations, comparing his texts and drawings with later archaeological invistigations. The results confirms the accuracy of Rüppell's descriptions of the Temple of Amun (B500) and other temples and pyramids at Jebel Barkal and Begrawiya, particularly regarding architectural layout, the distribution of elements. However, the study also notes Rüppell's uneven focus, with Jebel Barkal and Begrawiya receiving considerable attention while other nearby sites were neglected in his discription. The study hightlights the importance of travel literature as a resource for archaeological research and advocate for archaeologists to consider the records of early travelers to Sudanese archaeological sites.
