Abstract

This research addresses the efforts of Arab scholars to establish a semantic linguistic theory for text interpretation focusing on speaker intent or intentionality as a primary factor in understanding and directing the text, the study proceeds from the principle that language use is not merely the articulation of words but the accomplishment of a social event where composite texts are bound by a general intent that connects partial events to the final outcome, consequently the intended discourse cannot be understood without considering the conditions of text production and the surrounding social systems as every text has a concept that may be direct or indirect
